A lot of people seem to think that things such as RC helicopters and model kits are dying out and that kids are far more interested in actually playing video games than messing around with what a lot of people would call “old toys”. Are there many arguments for and against this claim??
For
There are far more video game sales than things like model kits nowadays and this is because kids see much more fun in actually putting a video game straight into a games console and getting straight in than actually spending hours putting something together. I see the point when it comes to this, a lot of video games are played by myself. It is also true to say that video games offer a lot social things out to the people that play them. Xbox Live as well as the systems used on the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii allow people to chat to eachother whilst they are playing online, surely this is a good thing.
Against
It would seem that there are a lot more fans for model kits who spend a lot of time on things than there are video game players who are dedicated to it that much, is this something actually unique to the model industry do you think?. There are a lot of parents out there who will actually buy their children model kits so that they can bond with them, this is great. Note that model kits or in any case video games are not just for children or young people.
Working Together
The model industry knows very well that kids are interested in video games at the moment and there have been partnerships of model companies and video games companies so they can make models for the games. It really does make sense because people will buy both.
The rift is calming down a bit now because model companies have started to go along with the trends. Scalextric is something that video games haven’t looked at yet.
