PvP combat is in your Shaman’s future, even if you’ve avoided it so far. Wrath of the Lich King has brought a new emphasis to WoW World PvP. The big change is clear in the new real time PvP battle zone called Lake Wintergrasp, where the fact of life is always-on, real-time World PvP.
In this new zone, you face off on the live server to gain points that allow you to buy a wide variety of rare and valuable items such as the new Heirloom items that any of the player’s characters in that account from level 1 to 80 and beyond can take advantage of.

Playing a Shaman class character in World of Warcraft PvP can be incredibly fun because of the wide variety of things Shaman can do in combat. Whether it is throwing down an armful of offensive and defensive totems, or slicing their opponent to ribbons using Windfury, Shaman can do it all. And they do it with style and power. But the downside of all those abilities mean there’s a significant amount of learning you must do if you want to play a Shaman in PvP without dying continuously.
What makes playing a Shaman hard to learn is the same thing that makes it so much fun once you do learn: all those totems. When you count all the different elemental specs available to a Shaman, there are more than 30 totems combined. There’s a wide variety of them, with sometimes subtle differences, such as that between the Grounding Totem which disrupts attacks while Earthshock interrupts them. And some of them are very specific as to which class they are effective against, like Poison Cleanse which removes poisons as they are cast. You can choose among totems that dispel attacks, disable Rogues, eliminate the threat of the Warrior’s Intercept, and stop those cowardly Hunters from running away. Think of any situation you might encounter in PvP combat, and there’s surely a totem that will help.
This means that succeeding as a Shaman in PvP depends on your skill with using your totems. Get this right and you’ll kick tail. Get this wrong and you’ll spend a lot of time eating dirt. One major issue is that it takes time and mana to create each totem. If you don’t know which totem to create when, or you don’t know how to keep them active in the most mana-efficient way, your Shaman will use up its mana or totem supply before they can finish off the enemy. Then they’re doomed.
