This week we witness the unveiling of one of the most vastly  anticipated games of the decade; Final Fantasy XIII. This game was really  first teased at way back in 2006, so the lengthy journey to launch has been  staggering. Well, that wait is at last over and we can all sit  down to surely what’s going to  be the videogame event of the last few  years.

Launched in December over in Japan, Final Fantasy XIII has truly amassed a little controversy since its unveling, and the opinions acquired for  the title have not quite been the straight aces developers Square Enix have  been hoping for. The main reason for this is that Final Fantasy XIII  has quite considerably revised the basic  gameplay associated with the series, and indeed the RPG genre as a  whole. Gone are NPCs, interactive cities and an immediately open world.

As an  alternative, Final Fantasy XIII is much more linear and story driven. Gamers  observe quite a tightly set path for the first 25 hours or so of  gaming. Succeeding this, the gameplay opens up and gamers are  free to observe their own decisions a little more. This  has been a serious gripe for some, yet others welcome the more focussed  and cinematic method. It actually does depend on your inclination.

One  element which has been vastly commended is the  fighting system, which comprises an  innovative mesh of X and XII.  Gamers are now able to ’stack’ actions, and the more you can stack increases as you level up. Furthermore, in Final Fantasy XIII there are numerous different roles your heroes can command,  such as healer and  tank, and users are free to swap these roles during combat.

It’s a forgone conclusion that the graphics on this title are  wonderful.  Presentation has at all times been Square Enix’s strongpoint, and the series has always  supplied high range graphics. Being the first of the franchise to hit the  next gen consoles, Final Fantasy XIII is, no doubt, the prettiest looking title ever. The cut scenes  are so detailed and attractive you’ll wish to stare at  them for hours, and the in-game visuals are enough to compete with the FMVs of  lesser titles.

Add an undoubtedly grand story, and you’ve got the most important title of the year. It might be a bit different to what you are  used to, but overall Final Fantasy XIII is simply what everybody’s been  ready for. Masterful fighting, achingly beautiful visuals  and a promised 60+ hours of gameplay mean Final Fantasy has returned with a vengeance. Let the  adventure commence.

PlayStation Home Beta Goes Live

February 15th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

Sony’s new social networking clubhouse has now gone live and is called PlayStation Home.

PlayStation Home is a new social networking site, it’s free to use for Playstation 3 owners and it allows them to create an avatar, create your own apartments, join other players in online games, chat and soon the ability to stream music and video.

The release of their new virtual community comes after new that Sony has announced that they are planning on job cuts. However, their new social networking community could help them bring in some extra needed cash. They have started to come up with ideas of way to make even more money from this by offering new cloths and apartments to buy, plus starting advertising on the various billboards and screens throughout the community.

The biggest reason why Sony has released Playstation Home now is to try and sway the minds of some potential customers during this holiday period. Sony is trying to compete against Microsoft’s latest Xbox Live update which allows Xbox 360 owners to create their own avatars and play social games online.

However, will the new social networking community be enough to sway the minds of buyers? I very much doubt it. Simply because of this new Playstation Home, I don’t think it will sway the minds of buyers, considering the price of the Playstation is still high, and not planning to be lowered.

By looking around, you can get an XBox 360 with 4 games and 2 wireless controllers for around £130, but if you’re after a Playstation, the by searching a bit you can get the PS3 with only 3 games for a massive £270.

Although the whole idea of the PlayStation Home is good, and it’s a great idea for current PlayStation owners who want to interact with the games that they already own, I don’t think it will encourage more buyers, unless they reduce the price of the console, which they have said they won’t. So, good try, but I don’t think it will have much effect on the overall sales.

Caribbean Holidays and All Inclusive Holidays are perfect for a Winter warmer.

Playstation 3 'Home' virtual system has been hacked

February 6th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

The new virtual world for the Playstation 3 entitled, ‘Home’ has been hacked by computer terrorists. Developers have found an intricate way to access the Playstation software in order to allow the to customise their own Playstation home experience beyond the options provided by Sony and their development team.

The Playstation ‘Home’ experience was only just launched on December 11th and is a completely virtual world that provides PS3 users with a three dimensional social gaming space to interact and communicate with other online players at the same time. You can do anything from go to the movies, go swimming or even go on a date with another virtual character.

The hack itself is a combination of pointing the apache web servers which host all the data and information and re-directing the DNS to their own where they then can display their own films to watch and listen to their own music within the virtual world. The second hack that was established allows the user to download material off of the Playstation servers such as other user information such as avatars and the cartoon like representation of themselves as they appear within the virtual world, 'Home'.
However the most worrying vulnerability of the Playstation 3 ‘Home’ system is that any user can upload or even delete any file on the Playstation servers which could result in mass chaos. Any web savvy user will notice this flaw and the consequences could literally be dangerous to any user who is online. Yet there is growing speculation that Sony has deliberately opened its virtual doors to developers in order to let people develop user generated software for the ‘Home’ system. Having an official avenue for ‘Hacks’ and ‘Tweaks’ could prevent more serious and potentially damaging hacking attempts from other hackers, and could also be used to build an ecosystem of users and developers around the ‘Home’ platform. This would surely be a very risky but clever idea from the developers at Sony. I have seen the new ‘Home’ system within a Playstation 3 and it is absolutely incredible!

Excellent tableware. Reliable wine rack.
