The PlayStation 3 (abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game product of Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the successor to the PlayStation 2. It is PS3 vs Xbox 360 as the PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft’s Xbox 360. It forms an important part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. A major feature that distinguishes the PlayStation 3 from its predecessors is its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network, which contrasts with Sony’s former policy of relying on game developers for online play. The PS3 was also the first Blu-ray 2.0-compliant Blu-ray player on the market. The PlayStation 3 was first released on November 11, 2006 in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America, and March 23, 2007 in Europe and Oceania. Two SKUs were available at launch: a basic model with a 20 GB hard drive (HDD) and a premium model with a 60 GB hard drive and several additional features.

The Xbox 360, the successor to the Xbox, is the second video game console produced by Microsoft. It competes with the likes of Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. A prominent feature of the Xbox 360 is its integrated Xbox Live service. It allows players to compete online and download arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows, and movies. An Xbox support manual explains many Xbox features. They are Windows Media Center multimedia capabilities, mandatory support of high definition in all games and game downloads from its online marketplace. It also includes the ability to watch HD DVD movies with an add-on drive. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005. The detailed launch and game information were divulged at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Except in Japan, the console sold out completely upon release in all regions. According to Microsoft, 28 million units have been sold worldwide, as of January 5, 2009. It is currently available as: the “Arcade”, the “Elite” and the “Pro" console, each with its own selection of accessories.

The Xbox360 problems are many in number and quite common. Many issues can be identified by a series of red lights flashing on the face of the console. These are the three flashing red lights or the Red Ring of Death. Other issues are discs becoming scratched and “bricking” of consoles due to dashboard updates. Many articles have appeared in the media portraying the Xbox 360’s relatively high failure rates. When a Microsoft Xbox 360 console experiences a “general hardware” or “core digital” failure, the warning signs include freeze-ups, with the screen having strange, spontaneous graphical problems, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns, frozen and strange, static-like sound, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off. In newer consoles, there can be three lights flashing with a green light flashing in the center for power outages

Upcoming video games to get excited about

March 8th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

With so many big game releases like Halo Wars, Killzone 2 and Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X already come and gone, there are still so many more planned, I thought this would be a good post to write. So, that said, here are some of the games that you should be looking forward to throughout the next coming months and the entire year really.

  • Residient Evil 5 is the first one really worth mentioning, however, I personally won’t be buying this game, I just find it stupid how you can’t move and shoot or reload and shoot, but that’s just my opinion. I know that when this one is release on March 13th, it will be a huge hit.
  • Crysis: Maximum Edition - This isn’t a new game, but a box set of all the games rolled into one, you get Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars (the multiplayer) and if you haven’t yet played any of them, that will be the perfect box set for you. The game is planned to release on March 20th.
  • Singstar: Queen - March 20th.
  • Aliens: Colonial Marines. Not much has been said or relesed about this one, but my hopes are high for it. Odd release dates though for it, March 27th for PC and then unconfirmed for PS3 and Xbox 360.
  • Batman Arkam Asylum. I hope this is going to be a good game as I am a huge Batman fan. By the looks of the trailer you have to fight your way around Arkam Asylum to defeat the evil joker. It looks like seperate release dates are planned for the 360 and PS3, but I’m not convinced.
  • The Godfather 2 - 10/04
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. If you coulnd’t put down the first Chronicles of Riddick game, then you should love this one. with voices of Vin Diesel and still with a bit of FPS and hand combat involved, it should be a good game. April 24th is when it’s hitting the shops.
  • Fuel - I have only seen a few screenshots for this one, and it looks alot like the PS3 game, Motorstorm. I just hope that it’s going to be a good racing game.
  • XMen Origins: Wolverine. This is obviously a movie game so who knows what it will be like, some are good, yet some are bad, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
  • Terminator Salvation - 22/05
  • Prototype - A strange one, you play as a genetically modified person who now has super powers, might be good. Set for release in June 2009
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction - This game has been in development for a long long time so it really carries alot of expectations but lets hope it will be released when they say this time, June 2009.
  • The Sims 3 - Although alot of people play the Sims games, I hate them, simply because I think they have milked it too much. The amount of expansions that have been released is insane, but I know people will really want it, so here it’s in the list.
  • Ghostbusters - Who ya gonna call? June 19th
  • Dirt 2 - 9/09
  • Tekken 6 - 25/09
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - This game was only announced recently but it will definitely be a massive hit, with the amount of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’s sold and the amount of awards it picked up, this sequel will hopefully be even better.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2

It looks like a pretty good upcoming year for games. Hopefully no game publishers or developers will go bust, fingers crossed.

10 reasons why a PS3 is awesome

February 18th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

Since its launch back in 2006 the PS3 has had its critics. There is more than one reason as to why you would want a PS3

10. Media Storage Compatibility - Use your PS3 to interact with other devices and store files, music and images. The PS3 enables you to show off holiday and family snaps to relatives via the console without having to use a computer.

9. Sony’s Motorstorm, it’s an awesome game, and the fact there are two of them is double bubble.

8. Stanford University’s Folding@Home makes use of redundant PS3 processing power. Connect your PS3 to the Folding @ Home programme and know you are helping compute solutions for scientific and medical projects.

7. Buzz! Buzz! is back with a fury on the Playstation 3. The Playstation store allows Buzz players to download additional games packs. Your home is now a permanent quiz game show location, play other players from around the world from the comfort of your sofa.

6. Playstation Home offers a brave new virtual world. You can explore a whole interactive world built by Sony just for PS3 users with Playstation Home. Home on the Playstation is a little clunky and you may well wonder what it’s purpose is, and then it will hit you.

5. No need to pay when you can play online games for free with PS3. It’s free, it’s fast, it’s online gaming on the PS3.

4. Hi Def Games - I thought Tiger Woods was in my lounge. Blu-Ray storage offers games developers massive storage for awesome high definition gaming. The difference with HD games is immense, EA and Sony are both producing HD games.

3.Little Big Planet, it’s the game that is converting Xbox users to the PS3.

2. Playstation Live - Now you can record and playback your favourite TV shows via the large storage on your PS3. So if your tipple is Kate Garraway or Penny Smith, then fear not as you can gain hours of footage via your PS3.

1. Blu-Ray - If you have not experienced watching a Blu-Ray film via a HD TV then you are missing out, big time! Want to see films in crystal clear HD, get the PS3 for a Blu-Ray DVD player. Home cinema rocks with an HD TV system and PS3 working in tandem.

PlayStation Home Beta Goes Live

February 15th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

Sony’s new social networking clubhouse has now gone live and is called PlayStation Home.

PlayStation Home is a new social networking site, it’s free to use for Playstation 3 owners and it allows them to create an avatar, create your own apartments, join other players in online games, chat and soon the ability to stream music and video.

The release of their new virtual community comes after new that Sony has announced that they are planning on job cuts. However, their new social networking community could help them bring in some extra needed cash. They have started to come up with ideas of way to make even more money from this by offering new cloths and apartments to buy, plus starting advertising on the various billboards and screens throughout the community.

The biggest reason why Sony has released Playstation Home now is to try and sway the minds of some potential customers during this holiday period. Sony is trying to compete against Microsoft’s latest Xbox Live update which allows Xbox 360 owners to create their own avatars and play social games online.

However, will the new social networking community be enough to sway the minds of buyers? I very much doubt it. Simply because of this new Playstation Home, I don’t think it will sway the minds of buyers, considering the price of the Playstation is still high, and not planning to be lowered.

By looking around, you can get an XBox 360 with 4 games and 2 wireless controllers for around £130, but if you’re after a Playstation, the by searching a bit you can get the PS3 with only 3 games for a massive £270.

Although the whole idea of the PlayStation Home is good, and it’s a great idea for current PlayStation owners who want to interact with the games that they already own, I don’t think it will encourage more buyers, unless they reduce the price of the console, which they have said they won’t. So, good try, but I don’t think it will have much effect on the overall sales.

What's The Best Console For Christmas

February 15th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

With Christmas getting ever closer, many kids will be asking for a new games console this year. But which one is the best for your family? With the 3 main consoles, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 all competing against eachother for your sales, which one is the right buy?

Starting with the Xbox 360. After a price reduction during September, the Xbox now costs £130 making it the cheapest console of the 3. However, for this £130, you only get an arcade system, which does not come with any games or a hard drive, so, what about console bundles. As for the arcade system, you can get 3 games and 2 wireless controllers for less than £160. As for the middle of the range console, you can get a premium console which contains a 60GB hard drive, 3 games and 2 wireless controllers for £200. And finally, the best Xbox, the Xbox 360 Elite, this contains a 120GB hard drive and comes with 3 games and 2 wireless controllers, which in total will cost your around £260.

Overall the Xbox 360 is a good console, with many exclusive games including Fable, the Halo and Gears of War series. Also, with a massive online community, it's perfect for any family.

And next, the Nintendo Wii. The Nintendo Wii is an awesome family console, it features a huge choice of family fun games that will keep your family entertained for hours. The standalone console will cost you around £180, but for a bundle, you can get the console, 2 controllers, 2 nunchucks and 4 games for around £270.

Overall the Nintendo Wii is a good console, it's not like any other console on the market and has a huge range of family fun and single play games for all ages.

The final console on the list is the Playstation 3, this is also the newest next gen console, aswell as the most exspensive. The Playstation is very similar to the Xbox 360, except the Playstation 3 comes with a Blu-ray DVD player installed, allowing you to play Blu-ray DVDS. Also, just in a last few days, Sony released their new Playstation Home, a brand new online community for all their Playstation owners.

As for the console price, the standard console which includes a 40GB hard drive will cost just under £295. As for a bundle, you can get a Playstation console with an 80GB hard drive and 4 games for prices that range between £296 and £313.

Obviously the Playstation 3 is the most expensive console of the 3, but overall I wouldn't say it's the best of the 3, especially price wise. Although the console is similar to the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 has free online usage, whereas the Xbox requires a subscription.

Finally, I would say that the Xbox 360 is the best console if you're playing solo and for online gaming, but if you are after a more family console, the Nintendo Wii is the best.

Can Sony Survive?

February 15th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

After Sony announced job cuts for it's electronic division, Katsuhiko Mori, fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments, stated in an interview: "Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits". But could the Playstation console help Sony?

Although some people may point this woud that ever since the Playstation 3's release back in 2006, it hasn't been making a profit. And that it because of the rather odd but simple fact that Sony are selling the console for less than it costs to make. And it has been like that since the consoles release. Sony reduced the price below manufacturing costs on purpose so that they could attempt to break into the market.

However, it may seem odd, but Sony has done this will all of their consoles, Playstation 1, Playstation 2 and now the Playstation 3.

Their plan is that they release a high spec console at a loss which will last for many years and eventually turn them in a profit. But will it prove to be successful this time? With the high pressure competition of the Xbox 360 and the new market of Nintendo Wii, will Sony manage to make enough profit to cover their losses?

The problem is that Sony will not reduce the price of the console until they begind to make a decent profit. But as the consoles prices is alot higher than the competition, they won't get a huge proportion of the console sales, which, in turn will cause them to lose money for longer.

Although all that sounds a bit bleak for Sony, there is one upside that they have, Blu-ray. It was lucky for Sony that Blu-ray came out on top of the DVD battle. If HD DVD had won the DVD battle, it would have been even worse for Sony has their console would not have any edge over it's competition.

So, currently, it's not looking good for Sony, and with their release of Playstation Home being criticised by Microsoft and founder of EA, Trip Hawkins. Both of them have said that Sony's attempt at an online community is outdated and not directed.

Aaron Greenberg, a manager at Xbox 360 game console division, stated: "When they unveiled it, it seemed innovative. I think what’s happened is now here we are a couple of years later and we feel beyond that. It feels like 2005 tech in 2008.”.

Hawkins said "I can't tell if they're going towards this mass market idea…or if they’re being lured into essentially trying to compete with Warcraft or Second Life”.

After Sony spent alot of time, money and effort on their new social community, it has just been shot down, personally, it just seems like an idea of earning money, there are several things within the world that requires money to buy, and they also have sections of the world which are sponsored by different companies like Red Bull. I'm sure most gamers will hate the idea of being spammed with adverts as they walk around.

Overall, it's not looking bright for Sony, they are relying on Playstation 3 sales to increase so that they can make a profit, but as the price is very high, it turns many buyers off, but they won't reduce the price until they make a decent profit. Who knows what position Sony will be in if their console doesn't start to sell more units.

Which Game Caught Your Eye This Year?

February 10th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

As the year of 2008 comes to a close, it’s good to have a look back at all of the games that have been released throughout the year and to decide on which one is the best of 2008.

Throughout the whole year there have been some awesome video game releases on the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, but in my opinion, the later half of the year would have to be the best. Between September and November there were some awesome game releases, dozens infact, and they have kept me and millions of other gamers entertained this year.

Here are just a few of the awesome games that have been released in the past year:

Lost Odyssey - I thought this game was pretty good, although the combat of the game was not my favorite it was still good gameplay, but also, extremely long, 4 disks, really took some time to get through it all.

Condemned 2 - Even though the game is rather brutal, the hand to hand combat makes the game really good to play. The game can get pretty tense at times which really brings you into the game.

Battlefield: Bad Company - This is my personal favorite Battlefield game so far, mainly because it has a campaign. I thought the ability blow up a hole in a building was awesome, you could run any direction at a building and make your very own door.

Lego Indiance Jones - I am a huge fan of the Lego games, I think they are amazing and great fun. Even though the Lego games are very short, the humour added to them is awesome.

Lego Batman - Pretty much the same as Lego Indiana, with a few new features, It’s still an awesome game. All of the Lego games are fun for the whole family, everyone will enjoy them.

Civilization Revolution - I only played this game a few times on the Xbox 360 but I thought it was amazing, alot different from any other Civilization game.

Devil May Cry 4 - I know alot of people that love this game, but I don’t see the amusement with it. I played the demo on the Xbox 360 and thought, “hmm, alot of jumping”. I thought the game was very repetitive, not my cup of tea.

Mario Kart Wii - Although I am not a fan of Mario games, I did enjoy this one. Especially when you use the Wii steering wheel, it makes it a great game to play, a must play for any Mario and Wii lover.

GRID - I never thought this game was very good, yes the graphics were great but because you could rewind time if you crashed, I thought that spoilt it.

Burnout Paradise - The only problem with this game is the repetitive factor, you do alot of races and then get a new license, once you get that license you have to repeat all of the races again, just a little bit harder to get another license. Overall I thought the game was good for a drive around but the campaign can get rather tiresome after a while.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Even though I have only played this game a few times, it was immense fun when I played it. The basic controls and fast paced gameplay makes it great to play as a party. The ability to jump around as Pikachu is awesome, it makes it a really fun party game.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Although this game has alot of movies scenes within it, which sometimes can run on for longer than needed, the bits where you get to play are awesome, I though the graphics were great as was the storyline, when you got to play it that is.

Rock Band - Brilliant, I have always loved the Guitar Hero games, but when this was released I just had to get it, I loved the set list and loved the new instruments, awesome game and a must play for any music game lover.

Rock Band 2- Just like Rock Band 1 just with an even better set list and a wider range of songs, really great fun and everyone should have a go.

Guitar Hero World Tour - This game, like with Rock Band is a brilliant game, the new instruments were awesome but I thought the set list really dragged it down, obviously it depends on your taste but I wasn’t amazed by it.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - You can’t really complain about this game, all of the other GTA’s have been awesome but this one managed to top the lot. Outstanding graphics and the ability to change the way the game ends depending on the choices you make just makes it even better. Plus with the addition of new content coming next year, the game just gets deeper and better.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Most likely only World of Warcraft players will want to read this one, it was a great game, with a new level cap, new raid cotent, a new class and new professions. This game will keep me entertained for many hours.

Gears of War 2 - Superb, just that one word needed. The amazing graphics and storyline kept you in the game and the non stop blood and action kept you amazed for the whole thing. This is a must have game for any Xbox 360 owner.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Although the game was good, and it had alot of hype before it was released, once it was, I was not totally amased by it all. The whole look and gameplay of it was awesome but the length of the storyline was not great, plus with no online play, the game was over with a few days.

Left 4 Dead - If you were a fan of games like Half Life and Counter Strike, you’ll love Left 4 Dead, it’s made by the same people but this time it’s got zombies. You work as a team of 4 to fight your way out of the city. I really like the emphasis that the game has on team work and how the weapons are so realistic.

Fable 2 - In one way this game was awesome and in another is was ok. The entire storyline, gameplay, graphics and the ability to change the game by the decisions you make. But the length and difficulty of the game was a let down, I found it to be alot shorter than the original Fable and it was also alot simpler as you didn’t seem to face any tough bosses. Even though it has some downsides, It’s still a great game.

Mirror’s Edge - Some might say this is a bad game, too much like Assassins Creed, but I loved Assassins Creed. I personally thought that Mirror’s Edge was great, the graphics were outstanding and the whole storyline was great, the only downside I found was the cut scenes, they looked really poor to be honest.

Far Cry 2 - There is one major problem with this game, once you start to play, you can’t stop for several hours. The whole storyline and ability to change the game as you play is great, plus having to battle with malaria, brings a whole new dimension to the game. You have a wide range of weapons to choose from all to help you gain an advantage on your enemies, plus the game features are awesome. All these things made it an awesome game, one of the best of 2008.

Call of Duty 5: World of War - This game had a lot to live up to, considering Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat won several Goldden Joystick Awards. I wasn’t as entertained as it went back to the World Wars instead of staying with modern combat. But that aside, the gameplay and graphics were great, although it didn’t quite live up to the reputation left by CoD4.

All of the games listed above were brilliant to play and lots of fun, but when it comes to choosing a game of 2008, it’s a really difficult one. I would personally have to choose between Rock Band and Gears of War 2 and because of the amazing fight scenes and outstanding graphics and storyline, I would have to choose Gears of War 2 as my game of 2008. What’s your game of the year?

Caribbean Holidays and All Inclusive Holidays are great for this Winter.

Playstation 3 'Home' virtual system has been hacked

February 6th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

The new virtual world for the Playstation 3 entitled, ‘Home’ has been hacked by computer terrorists. Developers have found an intricate way to access the Playstation software in order to allow the to customise their own Playstation home experience beyond the options provided by Sony and their development team.

The Playstation ‘Home’ experience was only just launched on December 11th and is a completely virtual world that provides PS3 users with a three dimensional social gaming space to interact and communicate with other online players at the same time. You can do anything from go to the movies, go swimming or even go on a date with another virtual character.

The hack itself is a combination of pointing the apache web servers which host all the data and information and re-directing the DNS to their own where they then can display their own films to watch and listen to their own music within the virtual world. The second hack that was established allows the user to download material off of the Playstation servers such as other user information such as avatars and the cartoon like representation of themselves as they appear within the virtual world, 'Home'.
However the most worrying vulnerability of the Playstation 3 ‘Home’ system is that any user can upload or even delete any file on the Playstation servers which could result in mass chaos. Any web savvy user will notice this flaw and the consequences could literally be dangerous to any user who is online. Yet there is growing speculation that Sony has deliberately opened its virtual doors to developers in order to let people develop user generated software for the ‘Home’ system. Having an official avenue for ‘Hacks’ and ‘Tweaks’ could prevent more serious and potentially damaging hacking attempts from other hackers, and could also be used to build an ecosystem of users and developers around the ‘Home’ platform. This would surely be a very risky but clever idea from the developers at Sony. I have seen the new ‘Home’ system within a Playstation 3 and it is absolutely incredible!

Excellent tableware. Reliable wine rack.

Cheap Playstation 3

January 31st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Playstation 2 Games, Playstation 3 Games, Playstation Games

Tips On How To Find A Cheap PlayStation 3

Since late 2006 the Sony PlayStation 3 has been available to American consumers who thought nothing of standing and waiting in long lines in front of stores for hours on end, in hopes to be lucky enough to find one PS3 still on the shelves. Unfortunately, the supply retailers had of the PlayStation 3 was unable to keep up with the demand and chances are you will not be able to find a reasonable priced PS3, but in fact have to pay a much higher price than anticipated.

Places to Look for a Cheap PlayStation 3

Since the retail pricing of the PS3 has increased so rapidly in the past few years, it is rare to be able to find a PlayStation 3 at a good price, at least not in retail stores. Currently, they are mostly available for purchase at online auction sites or in the classified sections of various newspapers or magazines where there are individuals selling their PS3s.

It is best to be prepared and expect to spend a good deal of time and effort to find a PlayStation 3 at a good price, certainly there is much more involved than just filling out the paper work for a pre-order list. When they first became available it was best to pre-order the PS3 since it gave you a better chance of being able to buy one at the current advertised price. This allowed you to reserve a console, which was important because they were limited to one per household but before you could reserve one you had to make a down payment.

Many people were not able to make the down payment required for a PlayStation 3 in the preordering process, while others found the pre-registration process was too cumbersome. This obviously meant that they had to look for a better means of obtaining a cheap PlayStation 3, which in turn led to people forming long lines outside of retail stores in hopes to be among the first to enter, because it was common knowledge there was a limited amount of PS3s in stock.

Soon it became evident that some people were buying up extra PlayStation 3 consoles not for themselves or as a gift, but with the main intent of selling them on eBay or other online auction sites. This meant if you tried hard enough you could still possibly get a good, inexpensive PlayStation 3 at one of these online auctions, provided you were the best negotiator and ended up having the winning bid.

There is another good option for finding a cheap PlayStation 3 which is to look for one on Craigslist, where local sellers generally will give you an option to buy the PlayStation 3 at a good price. To get the best price you must be willing to face the challenges and be successful against the competition. Still at the same time the competition itself can be a lot of fun. Don’t let your eagerness to find a PlayStation 3 at a good price be something that over steps your good judgment, because if you put your guard down of the traps set by unlawful sellers you could end up in a bad situation.

Also, it is important that you must never exceed your budgeted amount. If you feel that the price is more than you can afford to spend on a PlayStation 3, then simply pass the offer by and keep on looking.
