You may have heard a few people who play online games spout certain terms like F2P, P2P, NPC or leveling up. These terms are what you might call online gaming jargon and, unless you are already an experienced online gamer, you probably aren’t yet aware of what mobbing, farming or hunting mean in online gaming. Here are some of the most basic terms that you may or may not hear from certain online gamers:

P2P - This is an abbreviation of pay-to-play which is used to describe online games which you must pay the creator of the game to participate in. This payment can be for a set number of hours or, more often than not, on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis.

F2P - This term is a shortened form of free-to-play and describes those games which can be played online without the need for any paid subscription. The fact that they are free doesn’t mean that they are low quality though; indeed, some of the best and most popular online games are F2P.

Bots - This term refers to those characters within a game which are being controlled by a computer rather than a human. Bots are generally more predictable than human players as they can only follow pre-determined scripts, however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are weaker. Still, once you have learnt the typical behavior of a particular bot then they are not difficult to overcome.

NPC - Those characters within a game which are there to facilitate your adventure by giving you advice and helpful items are called non-player characters (NPCs). These are harmless characters for which you will gain nothing for killing.

Mobbing - This means to go on a mass killing spree in a short period of time. It is done if there happens to be a lot of weak players in the surrounding area or if someone want to quickly improve their characters points or reputation.

Loots / Drops - When you kill another character within a game you are rewarded with what is called loots or drops. These appear at the spot where the fatal blow was struck and can come in different forms. What exactly loots or drops are is dependent on the type of the character that has just been killed and what they were carrying. Typically though, you can expect them to be one, or a combination of, money, weapons, potions or accessories.

Farming - This usually happens in conjunction with mobbing, since mobbing often produces drops or loots that are needed by players to either make in-game money or steal weapons, potions or accessories from other players. This term is also used for collecting certain materials that are hard to find and are needed for creating rare weapons or armors that can help make a character stronger.

You may have heard the terms P2P and F2P in association with online games. These basically mean pay to play and free to play, and online games are either one or the other. The debate that is going on between players and followers of these two types of games often stem from which type of game is best and which one gives you more chances of building a strong character based on hard work or based on your having money.

If you only play online games a few times a month, then it can be hard to justify even that outlay. Therefore, for part-time gamers it’s hard to argue against F2P games.

When you play an F2P game, you can log in any time and play any time without the need for subscriptions and paid game time, but the downside to these games is that you need to purchase certain items in an item mall to strengthen your character up or to help them level up faster. This means that if you play an F2P game, even when you do not need money to play, you will still need money to build a strong character. As for P2P games, you will find that weapons, armors and accessories that you need to become stronger can be had in-game without the need to buy them with real cash from an online shop.

Population-wise, F2P games seem to have more players in them due to the free to play scenario that allows anyone to play, but the ones that get to the higher levels of the game and those who become stronger are often those that have money to spend on premium items in the games item mall. P2P games may not have as many players as F2P games (although there are some P2P games that are highly populated due to awesome game play and popularity) but the players that you do find in these games are more hard-core and more dedicated to creating a balanced and strong character with constant game play.

World of Warcraft Continues to Sell

Although it's now 4 years old, Blizzard's World of Warcraft retains its top position as the world's most popular MMO (massive multiplayer online) game currently on the market.

First released in 2004 in the U.S. and 2005 in Europe the increasingly popular game now has over 11 million loyal followers around the globe. The latest extension, Wrath of the Lich King, attracted thousands of keen online gamers when it was released at the same time in North America, Europe, Chile, Argentina and Russia. The previous popular game extension, The Burning Crusade, sold around 2.4 million copies in the first day of its release. This record was broken by the latest release which sold 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours.

Being a WoW fanatic is not a cheap hobby. In order to play Lich King players will have had to spend money to upgrade from the original WoW, plus Burning Crusade and then pay the monthly subscription of £8.99 before shelling out another £24.99 for this latest extension.

So what is the secret to World of Warcraft's runaway success? There has been no shortage of challengers for the lucrative number one position as the world's most popular MMO game. Funcom's Age of Conan and Electronic Arts' Warhammer Online use similar, fantasy, fictional environments but don't yet have the established player-base enjoyed by WoW. If they develop their user base perhaps they will lead in 2009.

But we haven't answered the question explaining why WoW is so enormously popular. If you are aged around 12 or 13 and all of your classmates are playing WoW online in the evenings which game will you be asking for this Christmas? This is a key reason why the game is successful.

Another key factor is how Blizzard have made the game accessible and engaging by making it easier than predecessor MMO games. This has made the game less off-putting and more engaging to many new gamers. This is another key element in the WoW success story. And another outstanding feature is, of course, the graphics. The characters and the game environment are very engaging and beautifully designed.

What is particularly remarkable is that, although the world is plummeting into an ever deepening economic recession, there is still enough spare cash around to spend on escapist entertainment like WoW.
