Apple’s tablet and smartphone devices continue to sweep the nation, making the company the biggest in the world since last year. Nintendo is also run by some terribly gifted folks, and the company works with some of the most gifted characters on the planet. You’d assume the gaming giant would see the benefits of combining its powers with Apple, but Nintendo’s president lately stated that his company will never develop games or programs for the iOS platform. It is not even something the Japanese company would consider. Now, as the Nintendo 3DS isn't able to catch up to the successfulness of recent mobile and non-mobile consoles, the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone became household names.

In fact , more folks now game on iOS devices than mobile consoles, making iOS the mobile platform to beat. That is true even though Apple’s devices are not the best hardware for gaming, but these devices are the best and most suitable to access. Like the famous phrase suggests, the best tool is the one that’s with you; after all, better tools are worthless if you do not have access to them when you want them.

When you combine that success with the top quality games and companies that sell in the iTunes App Store, you have got all of the ingredients you’d need for the “next Nintendo”.

Now, I know what you're thinking; touchscreen displays aren't the best control mechanisms for most games. That is true, but the great majority of people don’t seem to mind. Plus, a little bit of practice goes a long way, and I suspect the great majority of people know that. If you totally need a controller, you can always connect a Bluetooth arcade stick or game pad to your machine. Need a bigger display? IOS devices can send a video signal wirelessly to any display hooked up to an Apple Television, or you can hook it up directly over HDMI.

All of sudden, my PS3 and Xbox 360 don’t appear so special any longer. Still, I’d drool all over the PS Vita, though I don't feel compelled to buy one due to my iPhone and iPad.

The R4 Card Needs New Firmware To Work On New DSi Firmware.

Firmware updates for game systems are nothing new, they happen all the time regardless of whether you have a PSP or a Nintendo DS or DSI console at your disposal. WIth a new firmware update, there is sometimes the risk that your card will simply not work.  In this case the Nintendo R4 card, but an updated to the R4 Firmware will also fix this issue in no time.

It’s been a year since the last update for the Nintendo DSi console, but Nintendo has decided that an update is in fact needed and they have now released the update. What’s important to note here is that this update offers no new fixes or functions and no features of any kind.  However, several DSi compatible NDS homebrew flash cards are at this time, not working with the new update.

As a result of this, I would urge anyone who does onw an R4 DS Card not to bother updating their NDS or DSi consoles just yet.

If you like your homebrew games and can’t imagine being without your NDS homebrew applications, simply do not update to the newest firmware until further notice. Howebrew games and homebrew applications are not going anywhere, so worry not. Just the way updates have rendered R4 Cards incompatible in the past, the manufacturers are always very quick to address these issues and they will have no problem updating their on firmware to let you keep playing your games and appls, etc.. on the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi game systems..

With the help of the built in movie player, you’ll also be right back to watching your favorite movies again, as soon as the firmware update is completed.

Just as a refresher, the R4 is an NDS Flash card that allows you to power up your Nintendo DS or DSi console by allowing you to store and load games, homebrew applications, MP3 music, eBooks and Movies, all on tiny little microSD Cards. It looks, and works just like any regualr Nintendo DS cartridge would, with the main difference being that it will let your NDS do a whole lot more than just play those Nintendo DS games.

By putting your files in seperate and different directories, you’ll at least have them organized because you can put all of your MP3 albums in individual directories so you’ll at least know that TRACK-1.mp3 in the ABBA directory is from the ABBA greatest hits album.

3. Make sure you try and make a copy of all of your game saves on your hard drive at least 1-2 times a week. Not because you could lose your save games, but you may want to try a level again to get a better score without having to start from the start again. It’s also good to get into this habit because you may erase a game (and its save game file) and not have a backup in case you want to play that game once again sometime in the future. While this one really seems like an obvious hint, you would be surprised to know that most of our technical support emails for the R4 DS deal with how to get back erased or deleted game saves that were not backed up. I recommend doing this at LEAST once a week, more if you play your games more frequently.

4. You don’t want to take out the microSD Card from the R4 DS in the NDS each time you want to add files. Simply push the microSD card with your finger and it will ‘pop out’ of the R4 DS card slot. Use the included microSD card reader / writer to change your games, music and movie files or add more to your collection on your microSD card.

5. This is my final suggestion. And it handles the Micro SD card in the R4DS card slot. When you put the NDS, Nintendo DS lite or Nintendo DSi in your pocket or pick it up. Check to make sure that the microSD card is in the R4 DS card. Make sure that the microSD card is in the card slot of the R4DS and it’s not loose or ready to pop out. The chances of it popping out without you pushing down on the card are slim, but it could happen while you’re carrying it in your pocket. Losing you microSD card is horrible. Not knowing where it is because it popped out somewhere and may have falled on the ground is even worse. As you may know, microSD cards are very small, and if you lost one, you’ll have a really tough time finding it, unless you want to get a new one. If you carry your Nintendo DS in a case, then the chances are much smaller that the card will get dislodged from the R4 DS card slot, but it’s better to check on a regular basis anyway. You should do this before you even turn the power on.

The r4 DS allows you to power up your NDS by allowing you to run homebrew game and applications as well as watch movies, read ebooks, and more.
