Because online games tend to waste a lot of our time, they can be quite dangerous. What often happens to me is that my plan to play these games for a very short time will usually end up with me sitting there for hours without even noticing the time going by. The fact that I often find this happening when I am meant to be doing my work is a bigger problem. Because I work from home, playing these games is very easy and I waste far too much time. It costs me a lot of money. So it has come to the stage where I have had to develop a few ways to prevent me from wasting time by playing these games online.

 

  • Getting rid of all the gaming websites from my online favourites list was something I just had to do. It was just too easy before to click on an icon and be taken directly to a game. I was just doing that automatically and would start playing games without even thinking about what I was doing. Since removing the websites from my bookmarks I actually have to type in the URL address and this involves more effort and means I have to think about what I am doing.

 

  • I have made a promise to myself that I will not play these games during particular times of the day. Instead I schedule work for this time and stick to this religiously. I will allow myself the evenings to play these games instead.

 

  • If I do get my planned work finished earlier than I expected, then I can play a few games then.

 

  • I now try to turn the internet off when I’m working, and this further reduces the temptation to play games. Although if truth be told, I cannot leave it off all of the time because sometimes I need it in order to do my work.

When I left school at sixteen years old, I did not really have any qualifications. I played games all the time then because I’d nothing else to do; I couldn’t find a job. I first heard about game testing on an online gaming forum that I had joined; I was fascinated by this idea. I was a bit disappointed though to find that I’d need to have good writing skills. This wasn’t a skill I was good at but I decided to give it my best shot anyway. I spent almost all my time learning to improve my writing skills and to find out all I could about the world of game testing.

I first found game testing work with an online game testing community. Although I did not earn very much doing this work, I was able to network and build up some experience and this was very important. About a year later I found work as a freelancer and the pay was so much better. I have since been working continuously as a game tester and every few months my money goes up; I really have never looked back.
