WoW Hunters and their pets

Hunters are a unique dps class and they rely on pets in all aspects of the game since pets are their trademark. It’s important to make a wise choice when deciding on a pet. We can sort them into three groups, based on their abilities: Cunning, Ferocity and Tenacity. Click here for more on Hunter Pets
Cunning pet group
Cunning pets are perfect for PvP encounters as their talents will provide utility, mobility and flexibility. In this group we will include: spiders, bats, birds of prey, sillithids, chimeras, ravagers and others. Spiders are able to immobilize targets while bats can stun them with their special abilities so make sure to note these when making a choice. PvP hunters often use spiders due to their immobilizing effect, as getting range on your target is very important. Spending talents in the tree will further upgrade your pet with more stamina, speed, survivability or even with a unique ability like roar of sacrifice which allows pets to absorb 30% of incoming damage to you.
- Web - Puts the target in very sticky webs while preventing the movement for 4 sec.
- Sonic screech - is the bats ability that can stun a player for up to 2 seconds
Ferocity pets
Ferocity pets emphasize damage output of you and the pet itself above utility or survivability. Ferocity pets are ideal for raids and dungeons and in some cases they can add a very fine tune to your team’s dps for arenas. Ferocity type pets are: Wolves, Core Hounds, Moths, Cats, Raptors and others. Increased pet damage or overall dps boost to you and your pet are traits of special abilities of this group. Some hunters tend to use Core Hounds for PvP as their debuff from lava breath will decrease the casting speed of the victim for 25%. Lava breath can really be very useful in PvP when you combine burst damage with that debuff on enemy healer. Furious howl from wolves will give 320 attack power to you and your pet and is considered to be best pet ability in terms of raiding. Talents of Ferocity tree will either increase your pets survivability or boost your dps.
Tenacity
Tenacity pets don’t have abilities to boost your dps or flexibility like cunning pets but have higher stamina and avoidance especially when talented. Special abilities of tenacity pets will force target to attack them and boost their own survivability. Very few tenacity pets are useful for either raiding or PvP-ing. On the other hand Crabs are very popular in PvP at the moment as their pin ability will root the target in place for four seconds.
What is the best choice for me?
It is difficult to give a straightforward answer to this question as you need to take in consideration which content of the game you are going for and in which spec and set up you will be playing in.
Best PvP pets
Immobilize effects are currently very popular with hunters lately and therefore spiders and crabs are most common pets in PvP. Some hunters still use scorpids but are rarely seen.
Best pets for PvE
For dungeons and raiding, wolf would probably be the best choice even though some hunters still prefer cats and similar kind. Spirit beasts have and always will be one of the best pets for Beast mastery hunters alongside Dievilsaurs. For leveling purposes a good suggestion would be a bear or boar as they are the best tanks and even the turtle can prove to be excellent. Click here for more on WoW Guides
