Alchemy is one of the most useful crafting professions one can find in WoW. There are plenty of players out there who chose to skillup Alchemy fast because of its benefits. An alchemist mixes, transmutes and creates. An Alchemist has a purpose to create powerful consumables such as pots, flasks and elixirs and useful primal or metal transmutations. Herbalism – a counterpart to Alchemy

These two professions just belong together. Alchemy simply needs herbs to progress and create and therefore most Alchemists take Herbalism as their second profession.

Tools for the Alchemy

As mentioned before, an Alchemist needs herbs to create his potions, elixirs and flasks and he also needs vials. The vials can be obtained at any vendor who sells Alchemy Supplies found in all the major cities. Alchemists with a high level skill can also perform useful transmutations with metals and elemental materials.

A specific requirement for any transmute is a Philosopher’s Stone. This stone is created at the lower level of Alchemy and an Alchemist who wants to conduct his transmutation work proper needs to keep this stone in his inventory. When used, the Philosopher’s Stone will have a cooldown which will prevent an Alchemist to perform a similar transmutation while the stone is on a cooldown.

Special features of Alchemy

A higher level Alchemist can create a very good and unique trinket that only he can equip. Depending on his spec, there are 3 different types of this trinket to choose from. For healers and dps casters there is Mercurial Alchemist Stone, for melee dps there is Mighty Alchemist’s Stone and for tanks there is Indestructible Alchemist’s Stone. These trinkets will increase the amount of health and mana you are able to receive from potions by amazing 40%. With WOTLK expansion a new rule has been set that a player can only use one pot per fight and this is why Alchemist’s Stone trinkets are very handy, especially if you are a mana consumer.

Flasks also last longer, which is another great feature of Alchemy. A flask once consumed has duration of one hour. However, for any Alchemist flasks last for 2h! This can save a lot of gold and it is very practical.

Specs

At a higher level an Alchemist needs to choose his spec. He can become Elixir, Potion or Transmute master. By choosing one of these he will be able to occasionally create extra potions, elixirs or an extra transmute.

Discoveries

While doing any of the transmutations, an Alchemist will be able to discover new transmutes. When it comes to elixirs and pots he will be able to discover new recipes as well. Since Wrath of the Lich King expansion Alchemists are able to perform a Northrend Alchemy Research to achieve new recipe discoveries. Their research can be performed after each cooldown which lasts for 3 days. To be able to perform this research an Alchemist will need Adder’s Tongue (10), Goldclover (10) and Talandra’s Rose (4) which are the herbs found in Northrend. Together with these herbs an Alchemist will need 4 Enchanted Vials which he can obtain from Alchemy Supply vendors found in Northrend.

Elixirs and Flasks

Both flasks and elixirs have a longer lasting effect on its consumer. There are 2 specific types of elixirs - Battle elixirs and Guardian elixirs. Elixirs have duration of one hour and their effect will disappear upon one’s death. Flasks also last for one hour but their effect will continue even after the player’s death.
