When you begin World of Warcraft the biggest choice you have is who to join: the goodies or the baddies. The Horde and The Alliance are the two huge factions that are constantly at war and dominate the World of Azeroth, where WoW is based. So what sort of people choose the baddies and who picks the god side? What does each faction consist of? And the biggest question: Who is better? This short article should help you choose the faction for you.

Now while you can find bad guys in Alliance and good guys in Horde. On the whole The Horde represents the bad guys in WoW, and The Alliance are the good guys. You can see this clearly reflected in the races of each side. On the side of The Alliance you find Gnomes, Dwarves, Night Elves, the noble Draenier and Humans (who are supposedly quite good in fantasy games. And in The Horde we have Blood Elves, Orcs, Trolls, Undead and Tauren.

And so there are really 3 things people consider when choosing which side to join: one, what class do you want to play, because every class in WoW can only be picked by a variety of races, although there aren’t any classes which can only be Alliance races, or visa versa. Next you will want to go for a race that interestes you: because of the racial abilities they get, but also the roleplaying side of things. And finally - do you want to be Good or Evil?

In terms of who plays Horde and who plays Alliance: the demographics of players tends to be about equal. Slightly more people generally play Alliance, which is interesting. Perhaps to be on the side of the goodies, perhaps to be on the side of humans. Male and female players are equally represented on both sides. One small difference is with age groups: the average age of Horde players is one year younger than the average age of Alliance players.

Can we see any cause for players to pick one side or the other? We begin to see a very interesting difference when we look at the motivations of the players on each side: Horde players are much more interested in Competition, Mechanics and Advancement that Alliance players. To a higher degree they are pushed on by the prospect of achievement and competitiveness. They get greater enjoyment from provoking opponenets and challenging people, and are generally more aggresive - as the Horde races are known to be.

But in The Alliance, players want to enjoy the Roleplay side of WoW, and are more driven by customization: having interesting interactions with other players and characters and building themselves and things up, which are definitely things we accosiate with goodness.

So there we go: you pick a side based on what you want to do more: get aggressive and challenging or interact and build things. Would you agree?
