The Unique Nintendo Wii

When Nintendo first released in Wii console, way back in 2006, it represented an enormous change for the gaming industry. Even although this is a sector which is used to rapid change, the release of the Nintendo Wii was still a major deviation from the norm. Instead of introducing a more powerful, faster console, with upgraded graphics, the Wii introduced a completely new technique for playing games thanks to its innovative control system.
The Wii uses a motion sensitive, handheld wireless controller, which is able to detect motion and acceleration in every direction. Instead of using a conventional D-pad or joystick, gamers point, swing, and gesture using the remote control – now named the Wii-mote. This results in a very intuitive game interaction which cannot be found on any other console.
It’s very easy to quickly learn how to play games on the Wii. In the end, if you don’t know what to do, just flail your arms around a little bit more energetically and see what happens. That may well be one of the reasons why the Wii appeals to a much broader age group than some other consoles.
Playing games on the Wii definitely needs much more physical movement than the average computer game. The Wii is bundled with the “Wii Sports” game – and now “Wii Sports Resort” – which is the perfect vehicle to demonstrate just how different the Wii control system is. Wii Sports has five different games – boxing, tennis, golf, baseball and boxing. These are ideal vehicles to demonstrate, using the natural movements required in each sport, to new users how to use the Wii controller to its best effect. The Wii Sports Resort includes 12 further sports based games, such as table tennis, canoeing and sword fighting – all of which use the Wii’s motion sensitive controllers to maximum effect.
The games that ship with the Wii console are very good. They should keep you amused for a good length of time - and the other sort of games which do not finish. As long as you have a couple of family members or friends who want a game of tennis or golf you can keep going back to Wii Sports again and again – and you probably will.
However, there is a very good selection of games that you can buy for the Wii. Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog are always very popular and Wii Fit has proven to be an enormous success for Nintendo. The option of exercising in your own living room, without having to buy any expensive special equipment, is a big bonus for many people. Apart from your Wii console, all you will need is the Wii Fit software and the Wii Fit balance board – which are a fraction of the cost of a gym membership. The Wii also records and tracks your progress, acting as your personal trainer.
As a result of the Wii’s appeal across a wide age group, you will often find it in the living room of family homes rather than tucked away in a teenager’s bedroom. It does appear to be a more sociable console than the others - a lot of the games are best enjoyed in groups or teams, although you can play against the computer if you wish. That may be one of the reasons why the recently released black Wii has proven to be such a great success for Nintendo. It could be down to the fact that it is more coordinated with the other devices to be found in the typical family living room.
